From the Desk of Mr. Mattina, Principal

Principal headshotWelcome to P.S. 23!

I have proudly served as an educator since 2001 and have been part of the P.S. 23 community for many years, first as assistant principal and, for more than a decade, as principal.

My mission has always been to create a school that meets the academic, social, and emotional needs of every student. Through collaboration with our staff, families, and community partners, we have transformed learning spaces throughout the school. We renovated our auditorium and library and created a hydroponics science lab, modern computer lab, makerspace, and sensory room. We have also made STEAM education an essential part of the learning experience at P.S. 23.

Our school was selected as one of the original five schools to launch New York City’s specialized reading program designed to support students with dyslexia and other reading difficulties. Beginning in kindergarten, we successfully expanded the program through fifth grade.

I believe deeply in our students and community. I want every child to feel valued, seen, heard, supported, and loved. This belief inspired our school affirmation:
“I believe I am strong.
I believe I am brave.
I believe I am loved.
Most importantly, I believe I can do anything.”
At P.S. 23, we encourage students to work hard, persevere, and become the best versions of themselves—academically and as compassionate, responsible members of society. We also recognize that families are essential partners in this work.
Together, we will continue helping every child believe, achieve, and succeed.
